Dr. Cindi Sherwood Presented with the 2019 Harry M. Klenda Award
During the KDA Annual Meeting on Saturday, March 23, Dr. Cindi Sherwood was presented with the Harry M. Klenda Award for her outstanding council or committee service.
Dr. Sherwood was honored for her work as Chairman of the Constitution and Bylaws Committee. This hard working committee helped the KDA reorganize the governance process following concerns noted in the KDA Strategic Plan.
The committee has included Drs. Paul Hund, Dean Langley, Greg Kilbane, Justin Dillner, John Roberts, Rob Dakin, and the various Executive Committee members. This group, with a lot of help from KDA Executive Director, Kevin Robertson, have been active participants in numerous conference calls and given excellent advice in deciding what suggestions should be presented to the Board of Delegates and the General Assembly.
In what could have been a contentious process, the recommendations have been well received. The new Board of Trustees concept will begin in the fall of 2019.
About Dr. Cindi Sherwood
Dr. Cindi Sherwood grew up in Independence, Kansas. Her father was in a family owned paving construction company, A. G. Sherwood Construction Company, which was started by Cindi’s great-grandfather. Her father enjoyed community service and was on the Independence Community College (ICC) Board of Trustees and the mayor of Independence for a number of years.
Cindi also enjoys being involved in volunteerism, in her community, and in dentistry. She served 16 years as a member of the school board and currently is an elected member of the ICC Board of Trustees (following in her father’s footsteps). She also serves her church by organizing a community Thanksgiving dinner given by the First United Methodist Church.
She began her dental career by attending Wichita State University, receiving her RDH degree in 1975. While working as a dental hygienist at the Rock Road Dental Center in Wichita, she took the remaining prerequisite courses to apply to dental school.
Byrle and Cindi got married in May 1978 and moved to Kansas City for her to attend dental school at UMKC. Byrle opened a new architecture office in Overland Park, and then started another firm with a partner in Lenexa. He continued to work in Kansas City until 1991, coming home on weekends.
Byrle and Cindi have three children. Eli is married to Niki, and they have London, who is 2 ½ years old (and the cutest and smartest granddaughter in the world, of course). Audrey lives in Chicago, with Nathan, and they are expecting their first child in July. Daniel lives in Dallas and lives it up as a bachelor.
Cindi has been a member of the KDA since graduation. She has served at all the elected offices in the Southeast Kansas district and was a delegate to the KDA Board of Delegates for as long as she can remember. She served as the K-D-PAC chairman for seven years and secretary-treasurer of the K-D-PAC for five years. She served as chair of the KDA Legislative Council, for which she earned the Harry M. Klenda award for Outstanding Council Service in 1992. Cindi also received the KDA Dentist of the Year award in 2005.
Other KDA activities include serving as KDA secretary twice, then going through the chairs to become the first woman president of the Kansas Dental Association in 2015. Cindi has testified on behalf of the KDA more than 10 times in front of Kansas legislative committees.
Cindi has also been active at the national level with the American Dental Association. She has served as an ADA delegate or alternate delegate for 17 years. She served on the Council on Dental Practice, served on the ADA Task Force on Specialty Recognition, been a member of three reference committees for the ADA House of Delegates, and currently serves on the ADA Pension Committee as one of two members representing the House of Delegates.
Her professional memberships include fellowships in the American College of Dentists, currently serving as Kansas Vice-Chair, the International College of Dentists, the Academy of General Dentistry, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. Cindi has served in many roles for the Academy of General Dentistry including as a Trustee representing Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi on the national Board of Trustees and also as a national spokesperson.
The most fun Cindi has participating in organized dentistry are the Mission of Mercy projects. She has worked at all 17 of the Kansas projects plus three in Missouri, one in Wisconsin, and two in Oklahoma. In 2010, Independence hosted KMOM and Cindi was one of the co-chairs. She also participates in the Donated Dental Services program, currently serving as Vice-Chair for the Kansas Dental Lifeline Network.
