KDA Remembers Dr. Stephen F. Young
The KDA is saddened to announce that Dr. Stephen F. Young, DDS, the KDA’s 1984-85 President, passed away December 9, 2017 in Florida.
He was born April 14, 1938, in Salina, KS, the son of Fred and Eva Filson Young.
He and the family moved to Scott City in October 1941 to manage and operate the Majestic Theater. He attended Scott City schools and graduated from SCHS in 1956. He was active in sports, especially basketball and track.
He attended Washburn University, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta. He then attended dental school at UMKC School of Dentistry. Upon graduation from dental school in 1963, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. He then moved to Olathe, KS to practice dentistry.
Dr. Young was very involved in organized dentistry, including the Fifth District Dental Society, KDA, and ADA, and was always seeking what was best for his patients. In addition to serving as KDA President, Dr. Young served on several KDA councils and committees, and was recognized as the KDA’s 1985 Harry M. Klenda Awardee for Outstanding Council Service and the 1988 KDA Dentist of the Year. Dr. Young was also a long-time delegate to the ADA’s House of Delegates.
After 40 years of practicing dentistry in Olathe, Dr. Young retired in 2000 and moved to Florida. He continued to practice as a volunteer dentist at Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine and also worked as an instructor for the dental assisting program at Traviss Technical College. He was living in Winter Haven, FL at the time of his passing.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Young; children, Paula Munson (Thomas) of Sugarland, TX; Christopher Young (Debbie) of Olathe, KS; and David Young (Misty) of Apollo Beach, FL; stepchildren, Matthew Brennan (Kelly) of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; Michael Brennan of Hays City, FL; Mary Brennan of Marathon, FL; as well as four granddaughters, and his sister, Marilyn Miller (Darrel) of Scott City, KS.

Dr. Young has been cremated. Memorial visitation, funeral, and military services were held December 28-29 in Florida. Memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
